Frequently Asked Questions

Are you thinking about getting started with the Prodigal Pooch but still have some questions? Well we have answers!

Do you work with dogs of all ages, temperaments and breeds?

We work with all breeds (except wolf-mixes) and all ages!

I can’t decide between private training sessions or the resident training program. Which one is best?

This is definitely what our consultations are for! We will discuss your goals and availability for training.

We can set up private training sessions where we teach YOU to train your dog. We will be there to lead the way, but you are the one with the most direct interaction with your dog.

In our Residential Training Programs, you bring the dog to us. We train them first, and then we teach you how to maintain their training in our follow-up sessions.

Where do the training sessions take place?

Consultations and Training takes place at our facility in Decatur, GA. Follow-up sessions after our Residential Training programs can take place either at our facility, in your home, or areas in Atlanta that are fitting to put into practice the training that has taken place.

How much does Training cost? And do i have to setup a consultation?

The best way to understand what your cost will be is to setup a consultation with Blake. It’s important for us to understand you and your dog’s goals and expectations for training, along with any possible behavior issues, before we come up with a training plan.

Consultations are $100 and are a great starting point to determine a course of action to start your training journey. Setting up a consultation is required before joining any of our programs.

How much do resident training programs cost?

Our Resident Training Programs range from $2,800 - $4,500. Prices may vary based on our recommendation for your dog's needs.

What type of equipment and techniques do you use?

This all depends on your dog’s needs. Our training doesn’t typically involve treats, though. We focus on things like body language, praise and affection. Training also includes various sounds, transitional leashes, slip-leads, prong collars, e-collars, and bark collars. We use our evaluation process, along with the goals you have for your dog, to decide what equipment and methods are best for you.

Will I get to see my dog during the Residency Training programs? And do you have cameras?

No. We know that you will miss them, but this time away will be well worth it not only for your dog, but for you! We spend multiple weeks working with your dog every day, and we promise they are well taken care of! The separation will be worth it in the end.

We do not have live cameras, but we do post daily on our Facebook and Instagram.

What are your requirements for training?

All dogs must be in good health up to date on vaccines with proof from your veterinarian. We require the Rabies, Distemper (DAPP) and the Bordetella Vaccine. If your dog is going through our Residency Training Program, you must drop off a stool sample to your vet within thirty days of your residency start date.

How long does the resident training program last?

Our residential training programs are either 12 or 19 days. Schedule a consultation with Blake to determine what program makes the most sense for your family.

I just got a puppy! At what age should I start a training program?

You can start our Puppy Preschool Program at eight weeks! Starting them young right as they become a member of your family can help to build a strong bond between your dog and you as their leader.

How many private training sessions will it take for my dog to be trained?

Every dog and every owner is different! With private training sessions, YOU are training the dog (with our guidance of course). It may take 12-15 private lessons over 3-6 months to work to get the outcome you desire, but we promise you will have a better relationship with your dog in the end! This might sound like a lot, but with this many training sessions you will be able to work toward the same goals that your dog receives during 2-3 weeks of Resident Training.

If you choose private lessons over one of our Resident Training Programs, the results will depend on your skill level as your dog’s trainer and the time and commitment you put into training your dog. No matter which program you select, it’s important to reinforce many behaviors throughout your dog’s life.

Is your company insured and bonded?

Yes, we are insured and bonded.

Will my dog come home clean from Resident Training?

No, but that’s a good thing! Your dog will be a dog during their stay with us, and that means they will roll around in some dirt, go on walks, train and socialize outside. All of these activities will lead to a happier, smarter, calmer dog when they return home to you. If you want a clean dog at the end of the program, we offer a bath for $25.
